Sintra

To escape the blistering heat of Lisbon last Sunday, we travelled to Sintra.

At a higher altitude and with its own special microclimate, it’s a town of holiday homes – a summer get-away for city dwellers and a tourist magnet.

It bore an extraordinary resemblance to Shimla – the Indian town in the foothills of the Himalayas that we visited last November.  It, too, evolved as a summer retreat and, like Sintra, clings to the side of a mountain.  Even the names sound similar….
